New Jersey State Democratic Committee Reorganizes With New Leadership

The newly elected members of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee convened following their election on June 8. Leroy J. Jones, Jr, Chair of the Essex County Democratic Committee, was unanimously elected to succeed John Currie as Chair of the NJDSC.

Burlington County Democratic Committee Chair Joe Andl and State Senator Troy Singleton (D-Moorestown) were joined by Dorothy Bayles, Michelle Jackson, Lavonne Bebler Johnson and Andrew Douglas to represent the county in the newly convened state committee.

“It is truly an honor to be elected to lead the New Jersey Democratic State Committee and I pledge to use this tremendous opportunity to continue growing our party, organizing our voters and helping deliver positive change in our great state,” said Chairman Jones. “I would like to thank the members of the Democratic State Committee for their unanimous support as well as Governor Murphy and Democratic leaders for their confidence in me. I would also like to commend my friend, John Currie, and thank him for his tireless work leading our party over the last eight years — he leaves big shoes to fill and I will work my hardest to live up to the example he has set.”

The NJDSC’s new Executive Committee was also elected:

  • Chairman LeRoy Jones, Jr.

  • Vice Chair Marguerite “Peg” Schaffer

  • Secretary Claribel “Clary” Azcona-Barber

  • Treasurer Medinah Muhammad

Saily Avelenda will remain Executive Director of the NJDSC following the reorganization.
